A fresh industry push for financial advice reform is putting a spotlight on a problem many Australians quietly face: having life insurance in place, often through superannuation, but not fully understanding what it covers, when it pays, or whether it still matches their circumstances.

The Council of Australian Life Insurers has renewed calls for the Federal Government to progress advice reforms after new survey findings indicated that only about one in three Australians understands the life insurance products and benefits they hold. At the same time, life insurers have paid almost $6 billion across roughly 54,000 group superannuation claims over the past year, showing that cover through super can be a significant safety net when illness, injury, disability or death disrupts a household.

For Partnership Insurance readers, the key issue is not whether insurance through super has value. It clearly can. The more practical question is whether default or existing cover is enough for your real financial obligations. A standard policy may not reflect a mortgage, dependent children, business debt, a buy-sell agreement, or the financial impact of losing a partner in a business. This is where comparing options becomes more than a price exercise; it becomes a way to test whether your cover is fit for purpose.

Insurance held through super can also differ from individually arranged cover. Definitions, waiting periods, exclusions, benefit periods and the way premiums are funded can all affect outcomes. Some people may have automatic death or total and permanent disability cover, while income protection may be limited, optional, or absent. Others may have lost cover because of account inactivity, low balances, changed work patterns or fund rules they have not revisited for years.

The renewed focus on advice reform matters because life insurance decisions are rarely simple. Many Australians need help translating policy wording into practical answers: how much cover is enough, who should own the policy, how premiums affect cash flow, and what happens at claim time. For business owners and partners, the questions can be even more specific, particularly where cover is designed to protect ownership, debt repayment or succession arrangements.

Before making changes, policyholders should review current cover, check beneficiaries, read key exclusions and confirm whether their insured amount still reflects today’s obligations. It may also be worth seeking professional help before cancelling or replacing a policy, especially if health, occupation or income has changed since the original cover was arranged.

The broader message is clear: life insurance should not be left running in the background without review. As household budgets remain under pressure, the best cover is not always the cheapest. It is the cover that is understood, affordable, properly structured and ready to respond when it is needed most.
