Recent income protection cost commentary has put a practical issue back in front of Australian workers: two policies that appear similar at first glance can carry very different long-term costs.
For people relying on their income to meet mortgage repayments, rent, school fees, business expenses or family commitments, the premium is important, but it should not be viewed in isolation.

Income protection insurance premiums are typically shaped by several moving parts, including age, occupation, income level, smoking status, health history and the way benefits are structured. Policy settings such as the waiting period and benefit period can also make a substantial difference. A shorter waiting period may provide faster access to benefits after illness or injury, but it generally costs more. A longer benefit period may offer stronger protection if recovery takes time, but it can also increase premiums.

This is particularly relevant for professionals, contractors and self-employed Australians whose household cash flow depends heavily on their personal work capacity. A cheaper policy may look attractive, but if the waiting period is too long, the monthly benefit is too low, or exclusions are too broad, the cover may not provide the expected support when it is needed most.

Another point receiving attention is the difference between stepped and level-style premium structures. Stepped premiums may start lower but can rise as the insured person gets older. Level-style premiums may be higher at the beginning, but can provide greater cost predictability over time, depending on the policy terms. The right structure depends on how long the cover is likely to be held, budget flexibility and broader financial planning needs.

For consumers, the key lesson is to look beyond the headline price. Before choosing or renewing a policy, it can help to:

  • check whether the insured monthly benefit reflects current earnings and essential expenses;
  • review how long savings could cover bills during the waiting period;
  • understand exclusions, offsets and definitions of disability;
  • consider whether premiums remain affordable if they rise in future;
  • compare cover options rather than assuming all policies work the same way.

The broader affordability message is reassuring rather than alarming. Income protection can often be tailored, but tailoring involves trade-offs. A careful review of benefit levels, waiting periods, benefit periods and policy wording may help Australians find cover that balances cost with meaningful protection if illness or injury interrupts their ability to earn.
